The AH-1W Super Cobra is the USMC's current attack helicopter. Capable of carrying a wide range of weapons including its 20mm cannon, 2.75in rockets, Hellfire, and TOW missiles, the Super Cobra has long been one of the most reliable and effective gunships in the world. The USMC is currently developing a program to upgrade its current AH-1W's and UH-1N's to the AH-1Z and UH-1Y models. The Zulu model includes an all-new four-blade rotor, more advanced avionics (including a radar pod developed by Longbow International), a new helmet display system, and 80% commonality with the UH-1Y. The first flight of the AH-1Z took place on Dec. 7, 2000.
