The UH-1N is used by the Marine Corps for airborne command/control, maritime special operations, aerial convoy escort, and coordinating fire support. Alongside the upgrade of the AH-1W, the UH-1N is being upgraded to the UH-1Y model, featuring a new four-bladed rotor, new avionics, software, and cockpit, as well as 80% commonality with the AH-1Z. The new rotors can sustain a direct hit from a 23mm round. In terms of weapons, the Yankee Huey can carry 70mm rockets, the 7.62mm GAU-17 vulcan, the .50cal GAU-16A, and the 7.62mm M240D. The UH-1Y is expected to enter operational testing this year (2005).
